Australia Day function in Budapest honours St George FC

The heritage of local Football NSW Premier League club St George FC was celebrated at a recent Australia Day function held in Budapest, and organized by the Australian Embassy in Vienna, accredited to Hungary.

Hosted by the Australian Ambassador Ian Briggs and Dr Christine Biggs OAM, it was a celebration highlighting the contribution of Hungarian immigrants to sport in Australia, including of course football, ’with memorabilia from the early days of St George FC, then known as St George Budapest,  provided by the club for the occasion, while St George FC also provided well wishes via video by current board members and playing staff.

“It is again a recognition of the fantastic history of this club that it is still recognized overseas almost seventy years after its founding”, stated club president Bruce Spiteri.

“Following hot on the heels of the recent admission of former longtime president, the late Alex Pongrass OAM, into the Football Australia Hall of Fame, it continues to show what effect the club has on the football landscape”.

It is a timely celebration with the new NSW Premier Leagues season now upon us with the Saints about to enjoy their return to their Barton Park roots, where they take on local rivals Rockdale Ilinden this Friday night.
