St George Leader Derby
MUCH MORE THAN BRAGGING RIGHTS AT STAKE IN THE LOCAL DERBY CLASH
All roads in the St George area on Sunday will lead to Barton Park, as the battle for supremacy in the “district” goes on the line with the eagerly anticipated “local derby” clash.
The rivalry between St George FC and “neighbours” St George City carries extra significance in this crucial NPL match.
Both teams are in the “traffic jam” for a semi-final spot with seven points separating sixth from eleventh on the NPL ladder.
With eight rounds remaining, Sydney United is currently in the sixth and final semi -final spot on 33 points.
St George FC are tenth on 27 points and St George City one place back on 26 points. This is a “must win” game for both sides to remain in semi-final contention. A draw won’t help either side, a loss will effectively end any semi final hopes for the loser.
St George FC won “bragging rights” in round one winning 2-1 courtesy of goals from Bai Antoniou and Justin Poon.
Both sides have been inconsistent in recent weeks St George FC “missed” the chance to close the gap on sixth spot going down 2- 1 to Wollongong Wolves last start. They have won once in the last five weeks.
St George City also missed their chance to get closer drawing 1 all with Mt Druitt Town Rangers. Prior to that, they did beat both Manly FC and NWS Spirit
With so much on the line tensions will be high in what will be a hotly contested local derby.
